Decentralized education
How can we provide a space for critical higher education under conditions where traditional university spaces are no longer possible for specific constituencies and positions?
In the face of systemic barriers that have historically marginalized certain communities from higher education—such as the Iranian Baha'is barred from universities since the Islamic Revolution—the necessity of reimagining educational spaces becomes ever more critical. The Baha'i Institute for Higher Education (BIHE), founded as a response to these discriminatory policies, has exemplified resilience and innovation in the pursuit of academic freedom and opportunity. This thesis draws inspiration from BIHE’s enduring commitment to education amidst adversity and proposes the development of a new model for a global, decentralized online university.
Leveraging contemporary tools such as artificial intelligence, 3D internet, and blockchain technology, this thesis seeks to transcend traditional paradigms of online education by creating a platform that is inclusive, immersive, and accessible to all, regardless of geographical location or socio-economic status. The proposed Web3 University aims to decentralize education, prioritizing community, knowledge, and contribution over conventional degree pathways and business models. Through a blend of virtual environments and physical pavilions scattered worldwide—each representing a fragment of a metaphorical shattered glass globe—this innovative educational ecosystem will offer robust opportunities for learning, networking, and societal contribution, ultimately fostering a diverse and inclusive community committed to the advancement of humankind.
