The Perfect World
This design project uses speculative fiction and world building technics in game design to create an open world map dominated by natural landscape set in the distant future. After catastrophic war and climate disaster, the remaining human society divided into two different ways of living. One group was traumatized by the cruelty of nature, they re-established the previous extraction-consumption based economy and rebuilt large scale city to separate themselves from the hostility of nature. They enjoy the benefit of industrialization but at the same time bear all the consequences such as pollution. While the other group embraced the reality of nature and acknowledge that it was human themselves that caused the disasters. They believe in co-existence and actively protect the ecosystem so that the disasters wouldn’t repeat. They lack material wealth and faces the risk of wilderness.
The project chose an aesthetic style detached from reality, and the landscape took inspiration from fantasy genre. This design choice shifts the perspective away from the current paradigm in society and enables new understanding and exploration of a world that is unfamiliar to the audience. This is a show case study of how visual languages, world building methodologies and game engine can combine into a great medium for storytelling and the expression of emotion.
This project is also a case study of stylized landscape creation and environmental art. It aims to create vivid natural scenery that is believable and highly unified with the background stories.
