Set Opps
Embark on an immersive installation meticulously curated by designers Yara Kamali and Mohamed Rezk. "Set Opps” invites you to delve deep into the multifaceted themes of Hybrid identity, Cultural Fusion, Extraction, and Displacement, all set against the vibrant cultural tapestry of South West Asia and North Africa.
Each facet of this experience is a canvas for artistic creativity. Sculptures, born from the transformation of upcycled aviation parts, sourced from the Mojave desert's aviation junkyards, symbolically bridge transportation and camels. Animations breathe life into narratives, while art pieces resonate with stories deeply rooted in the regions they represent. These elements coalesce to craft spatial narrative-based realms.
Drawing inspiration from the world of installation art, “Set Opps” presents a sculpted and captivating space steeped in storytelling. Within this immersive environment, three distinct protagonists emerge, each representing a unique narrative thread: one steeped in historical context, another entwined with contemporary dynamics, and the third deeply rooted in lived experiences. These narratives artfully intertwine, weaving a vivid notion that envisions alternative futures and spaces within the very framework of the built environment.
As you step into this installation, we invite you to be an active participant. Pathways guide your journey, but curiosity is your compass. Engage with sculptures, immerse yourself in animations, and let the art pieces transport you into intricate stories. Central to this experience is an animation piece in the form of a news anchor, who will expertly guide you through the installation's themes. We encourage you to transcend past observation—actively engage with the narratives as they unfold before you. "Set Opps" invites you to touch, feel, and forge a profound connection with these intricate themes.
For a deeper understanding, delve into an excerpt from the installation's journal—a treasury of artifacts, thoughts, ideas, research articles, images, sketches, notes, diagrams, and project treatments. Here, Hybrid identity, Cultural Fusion, Extraction, and Displacement come alive, reflecting the essence of architectural theory thoroughly explored by Yara and Mo. This installation merges art and academia, offering a thought-provoking intersection.
"Set Opps" will grace our gallery from September 8th until September 15th, extending an invitation to engage with its narratives and immersive experiences during this fleeting moment in time. As you navigate this captivating world, we hope it ignites introspection, sparks meaningful dialogues, and fosters a profound connection with the cultural richness of South West Asia and North Africa.
