Untitled in Solitude
“Architexture”, Performative, Archival
Untitled is a multimedia installation and short film that defies traditional understandings of heritage sites in the Middle East, while challenging traditional narratives through the intersections of identity. Drawing inspiration from David Lowenthal's theory on the contested nature of heritage in which he argues that heritage sites are not fixed, objective entities but rather are constructed through a complex interplay of social, cultural, and political forces. The project actively renegotiates the relationship with heritage points in the Al Driyah, emphasizing the ongoing cultural transformation occurring in the region, launched to diversify the economy and reduce the country's dependence on oil revenue, improve the standard of living for citizens, and promote social and cultural change. "Untitled in Solitude” use of physical and virtual sites allows for a secure and accessible technologies, the project prioritizes the privacy and safety of individuals, subverting surveillance systems and empowering participants to navigate the installation with autonomy and anonymity. Furthermore, by creating and preserving archives of Arab expression, Untitled honors the diversity and complexity of identity, effectively challenging dominant cultural narratives surrounding gender. Through its approach, this project not only showcases pre-Islamic elements in solitude, but also develops a unique language through the process of "altering" found objects that elevate and amplify marginalized voices. This project aims to disrupt and expand traditional understandings of heritage sites, fostering a dialogue that celebrates the richness of Arab experiences and promotes inclusivity and social transformation.
